Increasing Tablesaw Port to 6"

My tablesaw had a 4" port but I wanted to increase it to 6" because all my piping is 6". My husband thought I was crazy, he figured that if the saw had a 4" port then that was what was needed. I proceeded anyway! I drilled holes all the way around the original port and use a hacksaw where I could fit it in. I put a strong magnet under where I was cutting to collect the metal filings. Once cut, I put a plastic duct connector from the inside of the saw cabinet and attached 6“ pvc hose. Casualties were one broken drill bit, one broken hacksaw blade and one metal sliver (in my thumb!)

That should improve things a lot. Is the opening above the new port open all the time or normally closed? Ideally you want openings of approximately 2 times the area of the 6" duct to allow air to flow in. If sealed tight as many do the dust can't flow out. Just like that cherry that gets stuck in the straw won't let you enjoy the milkshake. If that is a door/cover total up the area of the openings in the cabinet (tilt and raise slots, under table around the top, louvers etc) and then if you can crack open a door/panel on the opposite side of the saw to make the difference.

Pete, it’s just open so I could make the new hole. There are alot of small gaps around the saw though, not sure if I should tape them up or not.

No don't tape over the small holes. If you seal the cabinet tight no air can get in so none can flow out. 6" duct is 28 1/4 square inches. There should be 56 1/2 square inches of openings into the cabinet to let the air flow through and out. So the blade slot, rise and tilt hand wheel slots, all the louvers etc all added up plus whatever it takes to make the 56 square inches or so.

Okay, I haven’t tried it yet so I won’t cover holes and will see how it goes. I don’t have any overhead/on top dust collection.
