After extensive research I have started getting together parts for my cyclone project. I thought it might be usefull to post here the various steps I will be going through.

1. Reading anything and everything I can find on cyclones and dust collection.
Including Bill Pentz's site (which led me here) ,wood magazine site and all the woodworking forums. etc.
I also reread all the magazine articles in my back issues of Fine woodworking, American Woodworker, Wood etc.

I picked out a spot behind my 16x20 shop to put the cyclone under a shed roof. I will put the filter stack inside. I did a ducting plan.

2. Saturday 2/19/05 . I Visited Ed's shop and checked out his and his son's cyclones and saw how he makes them. The plastic is is very tough and will make a great cyclone. Go visit with Ed if you are close enough. I ordered the cyclone, blower housing , transition and 4 blast gates from Ed. I learned that most of the noise is coming through the filters so after getting home I decided to build a small fully insulated room beside the shop and put the cyclone and filters in it, and exhaust the filtered air back to the shop. I don't think I could stand the noise of having it in the shop proper. I changed my ducting plan to reflect the new site.

3. Today- Ordered Sheldons 14" Material movement impeller, 2 HP Delta motor from Ebay, 2 9L300BL filters and 10' of 6" hose from Wynns, 30 Ft of S&D pipe , some fittings and a steel 30 gal trashcan from a local hardware store.

Yes I will-just waiting on patrs to come in. my cyclone will be ready for pickup Sat or Sunday :D

2/23/05 I started digging out beside the shop for my 3x4 addition.

2/24/05- Got my Delta motor today . I can't believe it came so fast. Its very nice and runs powerful and quiet.

2/25/05 -I bought 71.00 worth of R-19 insulation for my little addition. i have some metal siding I'll use to build a door and for the walls.

I heard from ED, my cyclone, blower housing, transition and 5 blast gates are ready and I'll pick them up tomarrow.

I got an e-mail from Sheldons-My impeller has was shipped out yesterday.

2/26/05- Picked up my cyclone, transition, blower housing and 5 of Ed's blast gates

2/27/05- Moved the location for the cyclone room a third time. I tried to stay oppsite the house but I can't work out the ducting without a lot of 90 degree bends.
Now I am on the right rear corner. I got the layout done and started building but stopped for snow and darkness.

2/28/05 Recieved my filters and hose from Wynn and my trashcan from the Hardware. Mounted the motor to its plate and and checked bolts and seals on the blower and transition. Snow outside.

3/5/05 Worked on my "closet" addition. Got the roof line worked out and built the
floor from pressure treated 2x12s.

3/7/2005 Started working on my filter stack. I made a 3/4 ply donut that i will glue
to the top to screw the transition to. i will use a gasket between it and the doughnut.

Hope to have some pic's tomarrow...

3/9/05 Got the sheldon impeller mounted and the trash can lid modified.

Pics attached of the location I will be building the addition. After the pic's were taken built the floor but ran out of time. I hope to work on it this weekend.

3/10/05 Worked on my addition for a couple of hours. it was almost dark before I quit so the picture is dark.

Trashcan. I cut the hole a little small and bent it up then glued in the hose with Lexcel, this is great stuff.

Great job.....what is Lexcel and where can we get it? Keep up the great work and hurry up.........don't let a little snow and darkness slow you down.....I can send you a flood light.....<smile>

3-12-13-05 Worked on my addition several hours, got the siding on and started on the roof.

Ed-Some roofers told me about Lexel, it is a clear product that is a lot sticky'er than silicone. You can buy it in tubes like silicone on the cauking asle at most hardware's or big box stores. about $6.00 a tube. i takes a while to set up but seems to be ideal for this.

3-18/22-05 Worked on my "closet". Got the siding and roof on and built the door.
Last night I assembled the cyclone to the blower housing, my trashcan lid to the bottom of the cyclone and sealed any obvious leaks. I made a clean out for my filters with a pvc tee (ala Ed). I found that 4" hose will slide on to a 3" sch 40 tee
so that what I used. I glued it in a block with epoxy and sealed it with Lexel. i plant to run the hose out of the building and put the blast gate outside so to keep the closet as clean as possible.

I started to plan my return air baffle to the shop. Do any of you know if it needs to be a certain size. I know it will need to be a large as the cyclone intake piping but does it need to be any bigger. I don't have a lot of room. :D

Charlie,
I used a regular return air grill when I did my dust collector room, but I think it should be a little bigger than that. If it isn't big enough, you are going to pressureize your little room and if there are any leaks, you will loose air to the outside. On Matt's room we cut an opening about 14 x 20 and put a baffel in front if it about 4" away from the wall to catch the noise. It works good.
